The Digital Sustainability Index (DSI) is a composite score (0-100) measuring an organisation's national digital maturity context across four dimensions. It is grounded in the framework of Ramachandran & Oshri (2022) and computed using publicly available national indicators from the ITU, World Bank, OECD, and UN.
All indicators are Z-score normalised (zero mean, unit variance) before PCA so different units are comparable.
For EU27 countries with direct DESI 2023 pillar scores, a 30% DESI blend is applied to all four dimensions, making the score more authoritative for European organisations.
SDG 9 (Innovation & Infrastructure) adjusts digital and orientation; SDG 13 (Climate) and SDG 16 (Institutions) adjust governance and partnership - each at 15% weight. Source: Sachs et al. (2023) SDG Report.
Clauseway tells you which regulations and standards apply to a digital initiative (an AI system, a cloud migration, a data platform, a cybersecurity programme and so on), what each requires and by when, and a prioritised plan, with indicative ESG and carbon estimates.
Clauseway runs your initiative through an eight-stage pipeline. Deterministic rules and published data anchor the results: scores and carbon figures are computed, not written by a language model, and every regulation comes from a checked library with its official source.
A composite Digital Sustainability Index built with principal component analysis over public national indicators - ITU ICT Development Index, World Bank World Development Indicators, the European Commission's DESI, and the GSMA Mobile Connectivity Index. It places your operating geography in context; it is not a score of your organisation itself.
A rule engine checks your project against a library of 300+ laws, regulations and standards, each researched and checked against official sources (jurisdiction, sector, size and keyword conditions). Laws that apply only to listed companies or above a revenue threshold are checked against the size you give. An AI review (TypeSafe's Jev model) then rates each candidate: it may add binding laws the rules missed and set aside flags that clearly do not fit, always with a reason you can see. Retrieval over a corpus of primary sources supplies the obligation text, and a weekly monitor of regulator feeds flags changes for review.
Deterministic estimates from published emission factors - DEFRA 2025 GHG Conversion Factors, IEA electricity grid intensities, Uptime Institute PUE benchmarks, and Green Web Foundation grid data - with country-specific uncertainty ranges. Forward trajectories use IEA World Energy Outlook decarbonisation scenarios.
Sector materiality from the SASB Materiality Map (IFRS Foundation), GRI 2021 Universal Standards, and Open Sustainability Index peer benchmarks, combined with a structural risk model that the language model confirms or adjusts with narrative reasoning.
Before the report is written, every quantitative claim is matched back to a source and labelled fully grounded, partially grounded, or ungrounded. The grounding rate shown on your report weights partial matches at one half, so you can see how well-supported the analysis is.
Google Gemini reads your description, writes the narrative and runs the live web checks. TypeSafe's Jev model (via OpenRouter) reviews which library regulations apply, as described above. Neither writes the scores or carbon figures, and neither can introduce a regulation that is not in the library: anything from a web search outside the library is shown separately as "May also apply: check".

Clauseway is decision-support software. This explains what it stores and processes.
Your initiative description (and any uploaded document text) is sent to Google Gemini, the AI model that writes the analysis, and to OpenRouter, which passes it to TypeSafe's Jev model to review which regulations apply. Do not include trade secrets, personal data, or commercially sensitive details.
We store only your email address (to scope your saved analyses to you) and a session cookie. There is no password. Signing out revokes the session; sign-in links expire after 15 minutes and sessions after 30 days.
Your analysis history, obligation statuses, and organisation profile are stored in your browser's local storage only, not on our server.
Completed analyses are saved under a long, unguessable run ID. Signed-in analyses are private to your account; anonymous analyses are unowned and require the run ID to open. A share link is created only when you click Share, and lets anyone you send it to view that one report.
Unless you opt out, we keep an anonymised copy of each completed analysis to improve Clauseway: to fix and add regulation rules, build test sets and measure accuracy, and train better models. The copy contains your description with obvious identifiers removed (email addresses, web addresses, phone and ID numbers, and organisation and personal names we can detect), coarse facts (country, sector, size band, whether listed, revenue range), which regulations were flagged, added or set aside, any feedback you give, and the month. It is not linked to your account, email or IP address. Removal of identifiers is automatic and may miss some, so keep confidential information out of your descriptions. Because the copy is not linked to you, we cannot find or delete a specific person's copy later.
Google Gemini (AI processing), OpenRouter and TypeSafe (the Jev regulation review), Resend (sending sign-in and alert emails), optionally Sentry (sampled error diagnostics), and PostHog (privacy-friendly product analytics, hosted in the EU). We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.
We use PostHog (EU region) to understand how the tool is used - pages viewed, features clicked, and aggregate usage trends - so we can improve it. Analytics are pseudonymous; if you sign in, events are associated with your email. We do not track you across other websites. Your initiative descriptions and report contents are never sent to PostHog.
One httpOnly session cookie ("aidsrica_session") is set only when you sign in. PostHog sets first-party analytics cookies to recognise return visits; no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies are used.
Results are kept until deleted; the 24-hour result cache clears automatically. Anonymised improvement copies are kept for as long as they are useful for improving the tool.
